Baseball is a funny game. A player can struggle for a few years, throw out his arm and need Tommy John surgery. With slim prospects to even make a major league roster,  Philip Humber accomplished getting a slot in the White Sox’s rotation and managed to pitch one of the rarest of feats, a perfect game.

Of course, this leads to accolades, media attention and the respect that any professional athlete must crave. Four months later, after a series of rough starts, he finds himself out of the rotation, and soon, out of a job.

As perfect as his slider was this day, less than a year later he was out of the game. Such is the story of the career of Philip Humber. Highest of highs and lowest of lows, all in one season. Baseball is a funny game.
