Thomas Pannone pitches an immaculate 5th inning
Tampa Bay Rays fans must have been delighted to see their team rally in the 8th to secure a win. Blue Jays fans had the pleasure of seeing their team fall apart. Other than Thomas Pannone’s immaculate 5th inning, everything seemed to go wrong for Toronto.
While Marcus Stroman’s pace of play was slow tonight — did he need to rub every new ball for 5-10 seconds before he threw it?! — it was his defence that the real problem. Somehow Stroman gave up three runs over his four innings and lowered his ERA to 1.99. That’s what happens when all are unearned.
For the second day in a row, Lourdes Gurriel Jr. flubbed a routine throw to first base. My initial analysis was that he must be suffering from the Yips. When he was pulled mid-game and send down to the minors, it’s clear that Toronto also came up with the same diagnosis. Tim Mayza was also a wreck and for a good stretch, looked like he would never get anyone out ever again. Four earned runs over 0.1 of pitching is a problem.
P.S. How much longer can Freddy Galvis keep this up?
