ALCS 2017, Game Five
When I left Minneapolis at the end of September, I was sure that I had seen my 24th and final MLB game of 2017. The season was coming to an end, and so were my opportunities to travel to see another game. Little did I know then that the Yankees make it to the playoffs. Who would have predicted that they would make it all the way to the ALCS 2017 and that I would be in New York City for a conference the same day as game five.
Naturally, I got myself a ticket to attend my first ever post-season baseball game.
“It’s been unbelievable. I haven’t seen anything like it in Major League Baseball since I’ve been here. It reminds me of college football games. They’re going crazy the entire game. It’s a huge advantage for us, and it makes the environment tremendous to play in.” — Chase Headley, on Yankee Stadium during the postseason
The intensity of playoff baseball is very different than the regular season. The last time I was at Yankee Stadium the crowd was loud, but not like tonight. The crowd was on their feet for every play, and for some at-bats, every pitch. The fans pleaded with Tanaka to keep throwing strikes, went wild for Gary Sanchez’s home run. I was happy to quietly climb on the bandwagon for one day and share this experience with almost 50,000 Yankee fans. — Warren Wilansky
